A Look Back at October 2009

American Ballet Theatre Premieres Bold Design By Event Designer Shai Tertner of Shiraz Events For Fall Gala 2009

The American Ballet Theatre held their Fall Gala on Wednesday, October 7, at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, with Honorary Chair Iman and Veronica Webb.

The American Ballet Theater selected event designer  Shai Tertner, Founder and President of Shiraz Events to design the Fall Gala, who featured an ensemble act interpreting the movement and capturing the silhouettes of the dance company. An ode to artist Kara Walker whose use of dark shadows inspired Shai’s signature look for the gala. During the final performance which featured 3 premieres by ABT at Avery Fisher Hall, Shiraz Events orchestrated the setting of 52 tables each draped with a thick purple satin cloth with a centerpiece sculpture glass bowl draped with black star calla lilies (800 stems were imported from Holland) that extended and arched outside of the bowl and lit by a single floating candle.

The façade of the Grand Promenade’s balconies were illuminated in gradual shades of purple which tiered in intensity as it went higher. 48-light beams in groups of four framed the room, shooting tight crossed light rays into the air. Later in the evening, the lighting elements took a new dimension when hazers were used  to transform the gala space into a dance party. DJ Sky Nellor entertained guests as the dance floor was framed with a moving picture from the 1950’s and specially tinted in a purple hue.

The bravura of purple with accents of silver and glass, and the dramatic artistry of the lighting elements transformed Avery Fisher Hall into a grandiose backdrop fit for an encore.

“I am honored to be designing the American Ballet Theatre Fall Gala and thrilled about the new direction and style elements we have chosen for the event, which we have taken from a page of the American Ballet Theatre’s exciting fall season.”Shai Tertner, Founder and President of Shiraz Events.

Shai, who credits legendary event producer Robert Isabell as an inspiration, has made a name for himself and is one of the most visionary event designer, creating New York City’s red carpet events including Harper’s Bazaar’s 140th Anniversary, the launch of Manhattan magazine, and the opening of the Matthew Williamson flagship boutique in the United States, to name a few.

Notable guests include Natalie Portman, Rufus Wainwright, Mia Kunis, Emily Rossum, JoAnna Garcia, Adam Duritz, Alexandra Kerry, Amy Fine Collins, Anne Grauso, Blaine Trump, Bronson Van Wyck, Christian Cota, David Koch, Daysso Olarte de Kanavos, Fabiola Beracasa, Fe Fendi, Georgette Mosbacher, Grace Hightower DeNiro, Hamish Bowles, Helen Lee Schifter, Muffie Potter-Aston, Paloma Herrera, Somers Farkas, Susan Fales-Hill among others.

Ad Creative Q&A with Shai Tertner

August 24, 2010 by

In lieu of our new ad in BizBash, we did a quick 5 in 5 with Shai to address a few questions about the creative approach taken when the ad was designed. Only the best for our curious fans!

1. Shiraz: What was the artistic vision behind this ad?

ST: I’ve been decorating my new apartment and have been considering creating an eclectic combination of framed art and family images on a wall in my apartment. I thought it would be a great way to showcase the Shiraz Events images and be a little playful.

 ________________________

2. Shiraz: How does this ad speak the voice/personality of your brand?

ST: The Shiraz Events aesthetic is very clean and finished, however, since we work with many different brands and design environments for the brands, we have to be very versatile in our approach. For whomever knows the brand, it is clear that there is an evolution into a comfort zone where there is more use of color and texture, and I think that this ad manifests this clearly: we are multi faceted, our creative ability has a wide range.

 ________________________

3. Shiraz: Why did you choose these photos specifically?

ST: I think they showcase some of our best work in each category, they are well shot and I can even call them artistic.

 ________________________

4. Shiraz: You’ve used 2 photos of your staff, what are you trying to convey?

ST:  Do you need to borrow the reading glasses I don’t have?… 🙂

 ________________________

5. Shiraz: Explain how you differ from Creative Edge, and their ad on the back cover.

ST: I’m not too sure how we compare with them since we are two different breeds leading two different companies in a similar range of services. We both do great work but we position ourselves in different ways.

Holiday Decor: Tackling a Conference Room

August 17, 2010 by

As crazy as it sounds, the holidays are RIGHT around the corner! While you’re worried about how to design your  home and how to impress family and friends, cutting edge businesses are worried about how they’ll impress you at your holiday lunch!

BizBash approached Shai with this question: What’s a fresh way to transform a conference room into a holiday celebration?

Check out his answer and design suggestions below.

“What does every conference room have in common? A conference table. The table should be the central focus of the room, simple enough where meetings can still be held, yet chic enough to really bring the holidays to life. The best way to do this is by designing and decorating runners. Depending on the mood of the office, try one of the following!

Snow White

Think:  shimmer, elegance and peacefulness of a recent snowfall

Sexy Red

Think: sexy dark red hues of the holidays brass, gold and red

Neutral Green

Think: Snow White, and Sexy Red, but more of a whimsical experience.

Does the office have glass walls or windows? Compliment them with ornament or text decals.

Summer Produce for the Home Cook

August 13, 2010 by

Shiraz was asked by a private client to make an afternoon spread for a warm Summer day to coincide with an outdoor Barbecue. Taking inspiration from classic Italian Antipasti and the bountiful summer produce at the Farmer’s Market, Shiraz prepared a colorful assortment of items to inspire the home cook.

Caprese Salad of freshly Mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes with a trio of salts and olive oils, a cold pesto salad with market vegetables, charcuterie served with mustard and cornichons and a tarragon scented tri-color cauliflower salad were served with a crisp Long Island Rosé and Grapefruit Margaritas with a zested salt rim.  Summer perfection!

Floral arrangements that translated from the living space…

…to the wraparound deck.

Executive Chef Tessa Liebman and Catering Manager Michael Adasko brought the “farm to the breakfast table” bright and early last Saturday morning for a Kellogg’s breakfast in conjunction with Motherhood.com.

The morning sun greeted the guests and beautifully illuminated the custom Kellogg’s floral arrangements.

A cereal bar was paired with market fresh fruits, farm fresh milk, Ronnybrook farm Dreamline yogurt and housemade syrups. The blogging mother’s were also treated to an exclusive Southern inspired Shiraz frittata recipe of fresh Summer corn, jalapeño pepper, sharp cheddar and Corn Pops and Rice Kipsie Treats giveaways.

Hamptons Private Dining: Salad

July 30, 2010 by

One of the most exciting things about the Summer is working with clients to create menus that evoke what Summer personally means to them. To many this is sensory; sweet corn, blooming flowers, the  smell of the Ocean.

For a recent private dinner in the Hamptons our client wanted to incorporate items from their home garden and to utilize ingredients locally sourced in Long Island.

The result was a sophisticated beautiful salad which captured the essence of Summer.
